Draw an Arrow

An arrow may be drawn very easily using the available menus:

  1. Enter Insert Line mode and draw a line.
  2. In Default mode select the lline and add an arrow from the End arrow pull down menu on the Format tool bar.

However, there are only a few arrowheads available for selection, and the arrowhead is always the same color as the line. The remainder of this tutorial will show how to custom-make an arrow. We will use the rhombus created in the "Draw a rhombus" tutorial as arrowhead.

  1. Draw a line segment. Add a point variable (P_2) at the extension of the line segment.
  2. Select the point variable (P_1) at the end point of the line segment that is nearest P_2 and add the following constraint: "=weight(P_0, 25, P_1, distance(P_0, P_1) - 25)". This will place P_1 between P_0 and P_2 25 points from P_2.
  3. Include the rhombus_1.svg file. Fix the shape of the rhombus by selecting the yellow point variable and modifying the constraint from "=equidistant(P_3,P_4)" to "=equidistant(P_3,P_4) and angle(P_3, P_4, pi/6)". Note: the names of the point variables might differ, in which case substitute the names in these constraints.
  4. Snapp the free point variables  of the rhombus (green markers) with P_1 and P_2.
  5. Select the three bound point variables (red markers). On the View menu, select Toggle markers in selection. This will hide the markers. Note that the point variables are still there an are selectable.
  6. Change colors as desired selecting the head or stem of the arrow and using the pull-down menus for stroke color and fill color on the Format tool bar.
  7. Save the document as arrow_1.svg in the Basic Shapes folder.
